Remote Jobs & Flexible Work Ideas

Sighted Non-24 often requires patients seek employment with flexible hours. Free-running patients especially may need truly flexible hours. Some jobs may appear flexible at first but are not truly flexible; for example, a job may advertise as “set your own hours” but the employer may expect you to work the hours you set at the same time every work day. Setting your own hours is not truly flexible unless you can work at any time of day on any given day. For more information, see: Accommodating Non-24.

When it comes to working flexible jobs, it may help to find a niche to specialize in; this can make it easier to find work and to network within your field. We’ve attempted to gather as many resources as possible on this page. There is also a ‘N24 Professionals’ group on LinkedIn, but it is not very active.

For help with focusing while working from home, check out our Resources page towards the bottom for adjusting your environment to help with work-life balance.

Resources for Finding Remote Jobs

While sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and LinkedIn do offer filters for flexible work, for this list, we’re listing sites specifically for flexible work, resources for people with chronic illnesses, and so on. (We are not affiliated with any of these sites and cannot verify their accuracy).

Chronically Capable – wearecapabple.org was developed to help connect prospective employees with companies who care. Remote Education

To help get started in a new field or to demonstrate continued education, taking courses online and listing them on a resume may help when applying for jobs or finding clients. We don’t have enough room to list every university with online degree options, but this list offers some ideas for free (or inexpensive) self-growth. Depending on your field, you may also be able to look for extra certifications or networking within associations, guilds, etc.

Also look into your local library’s resource page on their website. For example, a library may offer free access to subscription-based education sites like Udemy.

Coursera – Free courses in a variety of fields which you can upgrade to pay for a certificate if needed. Similar to taking a short college/university course. “The website will say, ‘courses start on ___ date’ or ‘quiz deadline ____ date’ but the dates on free courses can be reset without consequence from what I remember; the education is fully flexible – it just provides some scheduled structure to help you move through the course in a timely manner. This is probably one of the largest course sites; they advertise having 10,000 different courses” (SightedNon-24.org Admin).

Alison – Free courses with a very similar model to Coursera.

edX – The above sites focus more on college-level content, while this site focuses on building skills and changing careers.

Harvard Free Courses – Harvard University offers 116 free courses. This is similar to auditing a class.

MIT OpenCourseWare – Similar to the Harvard one above, this allows you to audit over 2,500 classes for free from MIT.

Stanford Free Online Courses – Similar to the two above, audit 72 different classes for free online from Stanford.

OpenLearn – They have around 1,000 free classes from The Open University.

Class Central – Another online course site. You may find some overlap as some universities post classes to different free education sites like Coursera.

Kahn Academy – Free courses, lessons, and practice. Primarily mathematics, but also some humanities, life skills, computing, science, etc. This site also works well for homeschooling because they provide some lessons for younger grades.

SkillShare – Paid subscription education site. It is like a streaming service for self-improvement.
